In the world of haircare, the term “professional” is everywhere.
Shampoos, masks, styling… everyone calls themselves that. But how many really are?
In our salon (4 generations, since 1914) we see clients every day who arrive with “professional” products bought at the supermarket or online… and visibly damaged hair.
👉 In this article we explain what professional really means when it comes to hair products – and which ingredients you should avoid so you don't compromise the health of your hair.
🔍 What does "professional" really mean?
A product is professional when:
✅ It's used and recommended by experienced hairstylists
✅ It's formulated to respect the scalp and hair fiber
✅ It contains real functional active ingredients, not just “fragrance and marketing”
✅ It has a balanced INCI, without harmful or unnecessary ingredients
✅ It's part of a routine tested on real people, not just in the lab
We know this well, because every product we add to our shop is first tested and evaluated in our salon.
❌ Ingredients to avoid in hair products
Here is a list of the most common — but harmful — ingredients you unfortunately also find in many "salon" products:
🚫 Harsh sulfates (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate)
Used to create foam, they irritate the scalp and dry out the hair.
It's better to opt for gentle surfactants, especially on treated hair or sensitive scalps.
🚫 Occlusive silicones (Dimethicone, Amodimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane)
They create a “film” that gives an immediate smoothing effect… but prevent water and treatments from penetrating. Over time, they dull and suffocate the hair.
🚫 Denatured alcohol (Alcohol Denat)
Too common in sprays and leave-ins. It can dehydrate the hair fiber, especially if used daily.
🚫 Parabens and formaldehyde releasers (DMDM Hydantoin, Diazolidinyl Urea)
Used as preservatives, but potentially allergenic and under scrutiny for scalp health.
🚫 Synthetic fragrances and artificial colorants
With no benefit for the hair, they can cause sensitization and irritation.

✅ FAQ's ( Frequently Asked Questions )
❓ What does "professional" mean in hair products?
A product is professional if it is used in salons, has a balanced INCI and works on real people. A label or a high price is not enough.
❓ Which ingredients should be avoided in hair products?
Harsh sulfates, heavy silicones, denatured alcohol, parabens and synthetic fragrances. They can damage the scalp and hair, even if the product is "branded".
❓ Are supermarket products less professional?
Not always, but often they contain cheaper and harsher ingredients. It's better to choose formulas tested and selected by professionals.
❓ Why buy products tested in the salon?
Because they have already been tried on real clients, with concrete results. No surprises, only what really works for the health and beauty of the hair.
