When it comes to hair care, one of the most debated ingredients is definitely sulfate. But what are sulfates really? And above all, are they good or bad for our hair? In this article we explain everything you need to know about these compounds, how to recognize them and when to avoid them.
What are sulfates?
Sulfates are cleansing agents found in many shampoos, shower gels and cleansing products. The most common are:
-
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
-
Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
Their function is simple: they create foam and help to remove dirt, sebum and product residue from hair and the scalp.
Why are sulfates used in hair products?
✔️ Deeply cleanse
✔️ Produce a lot of foam, that sensation we often associate with “clean”
✔️ They are economical and easy to formulate in cosmetics
However, while they clean well, they can also be too harsh.
Are sulfates harmful?
It depends on your hair type and needs. Here are when it’s better to avoid them:
-
You have curly or dry hair: sulfates can further dry the hair and alter its natural structure.
-
You use hair color: they can make the color fade faster.
-
You have a sensitive or irritated scalp: they can cause itching, redness or flaking.
For these reasons, in recent years the trend for “Sulfate-Free” products has spread — gentler but still effective.

How to recognize sulfates on the label
Always check the INCI (the ingredients list) of your shampoo. If you see names like:
-
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
-
Sodium Laureth Sulfate
-
Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
… then the product contains sulfates.
